Out in the countryside

Børgefjell - Kjartan Trana
Medication doesn't always come in bottles. Often a long skiing trip, mushroom picking, bird hunting or catching a really big fish out at sea is the tonic you need to feel healthy and revitalised. In Trøndelag the countryside is important, perhaps because it is so close to you, wherever you are.
Hike and bike
With so many areas of natural beauty, it's not surprising that Trøndelag is a popular destination for hikers. You can easily walk for days on end with only your own thoughts for company. All of the seven national parks have well-marked footpaths for you to follow.
There is also a lot for cycling enthusiasts to look forward to in Trøndelag. A large number of marked routes await you if you want to explore the region from the seat of your bike. Taking your bike island hopping on express boats at the southern end of the "Kystriksveien", The Coastal Route, is a favourite with many people.

Hunting and fishing
With tens of thousands of mountain lakes that are perfect for fishing, wonderful salmon rivers and forests full of animals that can be hunted, Trøndelag is ideal for anyone looking for excitement in the great outdoors. Remember that in most places you will need to buy a fishing permit.

Mushrooms and berries
Autumn is the best time for picking mushrooms and berries. Few things can match the taste of fresh, sautéed chanterelles that you have picked yourself. Not many mushroom pickers are willing to give away their favourite locations, but damp ground covered with a mixture of grass and moss isn't a bad place to start.

Berries, particularly bilberries and mountain gold - cloudberries - can be found in most highland areas, and they can be picked from the middle of July until the first frost of the autumn. The pleasure of arriving in a marsh full of cloudberries after a long hike is hard to describe. Remember to put one berry in your bucket for every one you eat, otherwise you are likely to come home with an empty bucket...
